Tracking light motion

Experiment with green laser pointer

Third experiment with a green laser. This time I have noticed that with the camera I can track the light motion and the result is some interesting light patterns. This experiment made me think that there are certain kind of things that we can only see throught the eye of a camera. As an instance we can not see with our eyes the light beams that are depicted in the picture.
Before looking at Pablo Valbuena I was writing about virtual reality and how the physical space can be integrated with a fourth dimention, a projected layer as an instance. And it is interesting to see that certain realities exists only under certain conditions, like the laser beams become visible in water or the movement of light only through the eye of the camera.

Reflection of the laser in a bowl of water

In this experiment using laser pointers and a transparent bowl, I have noticed that the laser beams become visible when they are reflected in the water. The result is quite different from the previous one because this time the color of the bowl allow the light to be reflected; instead of a diffuse light we can see the lines of the laser beams.

Experiment with red laser pointers

Today i was just playing with some laser pointers. I put three of them on a string facing three white bowls filled up with water. Because the color of the bowls does not allow the light to be brefracted, the water becomes completely red as if there was some source of illumination from below. The result is a nice red diffused light that seems coming from the water.

Works that inspire me

Bruce Munro light installation

At this stage I am trying to have a look at artists that use light to create installations,to see what kind of materials and texture they use and get some sort of inspiration. The next step is gonna be learning how to animate lines in after effect and also I am gonna start experimenting with lasers.
Also I need to focus on some aspects of the area that could lead me to a solid design that is connected to the south bank.

AntiVJ

AntiVJ is a label initiated by some europeans artists who are interested in the use of light to create stunning visual experiences.
I think their work is quite inspiring as they use a combination of virtual and physical spaces to create a different dimension(pretty similar to Pablo Valbuena' s work). The spaces that they create are really suggestive and magical; they transforms reality into something much more exciting.

Pablo Valbuena

Valbuena installation - Centre d’Art Santa Mònica at Sonar 2008

Pablo Valbuena is an architect and an artist who uses lights to merge the concept of time and movement into the urban space. His work is focused on the temporal quality of the space and his investigations aim to create a link between the physical and the virtual.

Pablo Valbuena, door study 2010

In this picture, the light installation next to the door seem to be an extension of the door itself, like another virtual space that adds a forth dimension to the physical space. I think Valbuena is a good reference for me as i want to investigate the combination between the projected world and the physical reality and his work is a good example of how is it possible to combine the two elements together to realize beautiful sculptures.

Initial thoughts

What I would like to create as the final outcome of the context and condition project is a video installations that somehow represent the Southbank. So far I have looked at the history of the area and I was interested in looking at the geometry of the building that I have depicted in the previous sketches. In particular I think that the south bank provides interesting surfaces in which would be possible to project videos. The project then should combine two different elements that is what is going to be projected and what kind of surface could be used.

I am at the moment in the process of learning how to animate lines in adobe after effect because i want to try to animate the drawings. The question that raised into my mind is whether would be possible to use the video as an extension of a building, the projected space as a continuity of a real space. I am thinking about lines that run through the surfaces and draw on the building.

The light surgeons installation for the reopening of the Royal festival hall in 2007

In this video after effect has been used to create the lines that run on the buildings, the streets, the bridges etc..I think they can be considered as an extension of the real space that creates a quite funny and magical effect.
In conclusion what I want to analyze is the combination of two different spaces: the projected one that is inside the video and the physical one that is the surface where the video is projected.
